Ontario Geothermal Association Feedback on “U.S. Tariff Consultations”
Last month, the Ontario Geothermal Association (OGA) acted swiftly to protect our industry from a proposed 25% Canadian counter-tariff on U.S.-made products. This would have significantly impacted our sector, as most geothermal heat pumps are manufactured in the U.S.—posing a serious risk to our supply chains, increasing project costs, and potentially putting businesses at risk.
Understanding the urgency, we engaged Sussex Strategy Group to help us craft a formal submission and advocate directly to the federal government. Together, we emphasized how such tariffs would derail Canada’s clean energy transition and jeopardize the affordability and adoption of geothermal technologies.
We’re pleased to report that the government decided against imposing these countermeasures.
This advocacy is just one example of the behind-the-scenes work OGA does to safeguard the future of our industry. We want our members to know: we’re here for you. Always.

Q: Can a lake, stream or pond be used as the geothermal source?
Generally not in extremely cold climates. Water is not the heat source; it is a heat transfer fluid heated by the earth and is required to maintain a constant temperature. Therefore, the water must be brought up from below the frost line in colder climates where the ground freezes in the winter.

Environmentally Responsible Without Costing a Fortune
“I believe in being as environmentally responsible as possible—without spending a fortune,” says Mike Ault, a farmer in Hanesville, Ontario. About 10 years ago, he installed a geothermal system in his home, and it has worked perfectly with minimal annual service.
The 934 sq. ft. house, plus loft and basement, was upgraded with a Bard GeoTec 3-ton two-stage heat pump, installed by ATEL Air. “They did a good job, nice and neat,” says Mike.
Mike estimates his summer cooling costs at just $90–$100 per month, with winter heating around $250—significantly less than other options. “I have no regrets,” he says.
