Study Finds Big Savings for Government Electrification Plans Through Ground-Source Heat Pumps.
For many years, experts in the field have known that ground-source heat pumps (GSHPs) offer considerable energy cost savings to Canadians while reducing carbon emissions and contributing to Canada's fight against climate change. This report clearly shows that, in addition to these savings, the technology has unique attributes that could deliver many billions of dollars in savings to the electricity grid," said Sandy MacLeod, HRAI President and CEO.

How much does it cost to install a geothermal system?

The cost of installing a geothermal system depends on the type of system you choose.

You can have an open or closed loop, and it can use forced air, hydronic baseboard or radiant floors for heating and cooling distribution within the building. The initial installation cost is higher than a conventional HVAC system, but the operating costs are far lower.

"That market is increasing and actually increasing very, very quickly right now," said Stanley Reitsma, president of the Ontario Geothermal Association.

Builders now have an alternative to paying the upfront infrastructure cost themselves — third parties such as FortisBC Alternative Energy Systems and Toronto-based Diverso Energy will build and operate the borefield, then charge a monthly or annual service fee over decades to the condo owners. This way, "the developer gets to offload the risk and the costs associated with geothermal," said Jon Mesquita, Diverso Energy's chief operating officer. In B.C., such utilities are regulated and there are regulatory incentives for signing up with them.
