Alberta and other stranded oil assets: French energy giant Total has announced a stranded Alberta tar sands asset writedown of $9.3 billion. Also Deutsche Bank will pull out of Alberta projects. Earlier, Shell and BP took writedowns of $22 billion and $17.5 billion.

Bangladesh floods: At least 54 have died, most of them children; while an estimated 24 to 37 percent of the country’s landmass is submerged, according to government estimates and satellite data. Nearly a million homes were inundated and 4.7 million people were affected.
