Endress+Hauser’s Customer Experience Centre demonstrates environmental leadership by operating on a net-zero energy and carbon basis.

The building demonstrates environmental leadership by operating on a net-zero energy and carbon basis.

The facility was designed to extremely demanding environmental standards. The building generates its own electricity, heat, and cooling. It boasts a reflective roof with double-sided solar panels to generate green power during the day. At night, most electrically powered systems like video monitors will be turned off rather than draw even standby power and the building environment is maintained by heat pumps supplemented by a geothermal system.

This Percy Ellis project which is entirely geothermal is close to completion.

This Percy Ellis project which is entirely geothermal is close to completion.
The building is located at 41 River Street in Toronto. It's located between Toronto's Regent Park neighbourhood and the Lower Don Valley.

Several measures have been taken to maximize environmental friendliness. Each unit's utilities will be separately metered for the amount of electricity, gas, and water consumed to encourage energy conservation while keeping monthly costs low for tenants. Geothermal energy is also being used throughout the building—harnessing the heat energy just feet below the ground, and converting it into warm air through the use of geothermal heat pumps—and resulting in big savings on energy costs.

Going green shaves operating costs and boosts branding for dealers!

Early adopters of green design are Richmond, B.C.-based Auto West BMW and Mini Richmond, which were named "The Most Sustainable BMW Dealership in the World" by the automaker in 2013.

The building uses geothermal heat, has a green roof, a water reclamation system, solar panels and a vertical wind turbine.
For a number of years, the dealership grew vegetables on the roof, which were donated to food banks.

Check out this article that talks about the HRAI report on GSHPs.

The study was done by Dunsky Energy + Climate Advisors.

“For many years, experts in the field have known that ground-source heat pumps (GSHPs) offer considerable energy cost savings to Canadians while reducing carbon emissions and contributing to Canada’s fight against climate change. This report clearly shows that, in addition to these savings, the technology has unique attributes that could deliver many billions of dollars in savings to the electricity grid,” said Sandy MacLeod, HRAI president and CEO.

The report found that a reasonably ambitious adoption rate of ground-source heat pumps over the next few decades could save Canadians between $49 and $148 billion in avoided electricity system development investment costs – investments that would otherwise be required as part of the country’s GHG emissions reduction plans.

Should Ontario follow Vermont with generous new incentives for homeowners?

Should Ontario follow Vermont with generous new incentives for homeowners?
Great article on Vermont giving incentives to boost Geothermal heat pumps.

Vermont this summer launched an initiative to spur a challenging but potentially crucial market in the state’s decarbonization goals: ground-source heat pumps.

But even with generous new incentives for homeowners, installation is expensive — running upward of $25,000 to $40,000 — and the market is small. Supporters say that while ground-source (also known as geothermal) technology could help New England states achieve their electrification goals, it will take some time to ramp up.

Software and tech giant Microsoft is setting up a large-scale geothermal system to utilize hundreds of wells with heat pumps.

The company says this is likely one of the largest systems like this in North America and with 875 wells drilled it is expected to start operation in 2023.

Heat Pumps are Heating up in Waterloo Region! 🔥

The latest climate change report is bleaker than ever. But we cannot become paralyzed by that news or the reports that our governments, banks, institutions and pension funds continue to prop up Big Oil. We can all do something.

Heat pumps for residential use can be air-sourced or ground-sourced (geothermal). Water-sourced pumps work for multi-unit and commercial buildings. They do not use fossil fuels.

It's throwback Thursday! We posted this back in 2019!

Avoiding fossil fuels with Geothermal.

“I like that the AC is quiet and gentle. It's not a blast of cold air. We’re using energy out of the earth to heat and cool the house rather than other energy. So we’re not burning oil and we’re not burning propane.” - Mary Lynda, Optician

Is geothermal recommended for summer homes?

If a home is used solely during the summer months and completely closed down during the winter season (including draining all water pipes), it is not recommended to install a geothermal system.

How much does it cost to install a geothermal system?

The cost of installing a geothermal system depends on the type of system you choose.

You can have an open or closed loop, and it can use forced air, hydronic baseboard or radiant floors for heating and cooling distribution within the building. The initial installation cost is higher than a conventional HVAC system, but the operating costs are far lower.

For a quote on what it would cost to install a geothermal system in your home or building, visit the HRAI to find a geothermal contractor near you.
